Six iconic Rajasthan hill forts join the Pyramids of Giza and the Taj Mahal on list of UNESCO's top treasures after they are named world heritage sites
There's good news for Rajasthan's tourism sector.
Six iconic hill forts of the state - Amber, Chittorgarh, Gangron, Jaisalmer, Kumbhalgarh and Ranthambhore - have been put on Unesco's World Heritage List.
Their inclusion in the list, which aims to identify "cultural and natural property which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value", was approved at the 37th meeting of the World Heritage Committee in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The selection of these forts is a first of its kind effort by Unesco, said a proud Bina Kak, Rajasthan's tourism, art and culture minister.
She said she is hopeful that now the six forts will receive enhanced international recognition the same way Jantar Mantar in Jaipur has since its inclusion in the World Heritage List in 2010.
Several missions of ICOMOS (advisory body to Unesco) have visited Rajasthan since 2011 and discussed the nomination in great detail with the state archaeology department, Archaeological Survey of India and the Indian Advisory Committee on the World Heritage under the Ministry of Culture.
