You have decided to buy a laptop, but do not really know how to go about it.
I get asked time and again, how to buy a laptop. Sometimes it's for a student, sometimes for adults who just want to roam freely around the house, and a computer.
So, I came up with a short procedure to follow that will act as a guide to get the right product for the right purpose.
Step 1: Determine who is going to use it. Not only the individual, but a person - young or old (need reading glasses yet)? PC or illiterate (PC or Mac)? The person who takes care of your hardware or anything careless?
When I had a client who was blind and looking for a laptop. At the time, Toshiba had the best names in the business. We called a techy type of guy who worked in the association for the blind which was also the sight impaired.
His comment to us was the fact that blind people can be a little harder on things, for obvious reasons, and that Toshiba laptops do not hold up quite as well as they banged around. It is recommended for some of the other brands instead.
Experience has also shown me that students who do not buy your computer has a distinct tendency to be harder on things as well. Make sure they are well padded case and use it.
Answers to get one step will trickle down into 5 steps the rest, as you'll see.
Step 2: How long does this person have it? Is the student going to college and you're parents, we want it to last the entire four-year program (I hope they will finish in 4 years!).? If so, you'll want enough performance and guarantees to last that long.
On the other hand, maybe you're shopping for someone with lots of money who love the latest and greatest. (Is the doctor at home?) In the event that put money into power and toys, rather than a long warranty.
If it is due to the election employee laptop probably will not need more than a year or so, the two most. Set to replace it.
Step 3: Set the ergonomics. This is about the only use I have big box stores. To walk the aisles and try out different pointing devices and keyboard. Decide whether you want a widescreen or standard aspect ratio (standard is increasingly difficult to find).
Do you like the glossy screen and the glare will be a big problem, which can use it the most? Maybe you want a matte finish. Glossy looks a little sharper for the movies, and Windows Vista Aero interface, and see if someone sneaking behind you., However, if you have a lots of windows and fluorescent lights office mat may be better for you.
If the laptop is not used a lot, you might want to try some laptops - from friends or co-workers - in that environment. It's no fun if you can not read the screen.
Size and weight. Do I need to be compact and lightweight? Some very nice pieces weighing under 4 pounds yet large enough keyboard and screen to be quite beneficial.
A typical high-powered laptop will run around 6.5 pounds. But the behemoth 17 "screen tips on almost 10 pounds of scale laptop!
Step 4: What kind of support do you need it? Are you the type that just are not comfortable talking to support staff in India, and would rather walk up to the counter with a live (even disinterested) person?
Are you a self-sufficient work on simple things on your own, maybe even get a screwdriver and start prying off the keyboard, if the address?
