Kaur was born as Nathalia Pinheiro Felipe Martins in Rio de Janeiro. Her mother is of Portuguese descent while her father's ethnicity is unclear. Initially he was of Portuguese descent, but in later interviews she stated that she is "half Punjabi" while in her newest interviews she claims that her father is half-Indian with her paternal grandmother being Portuguese and her paternal grandfather being a Punjabi Rajput.
Kaur worked as a model since she was 14 and continued to do so while studying law at Universidade Cândido Mendes before quitting to work as full-time model when receiving an offer in India. She changed her surname from Pinheiro to Kaur as it was more agreeable to Indian media and audiences and could be more easily pronounced.
