The Wire-crested Thorntail is one of the smallest birds on earth. I was lucky to catch a glimpse of this one in Ecuador.

Photo of the day – This very strange looking bird is the White-necked Rockfowl (or White-necked Picathartes), one of only 2 members of this rather bizarre family, both of which occur only in Africa. In fact, they are amongst the most highly sought-after of all African bird species, drawing birders from around the globe to the few reliable sites where they can regularly be seen. One such site is near the remote village of Bonkro in Ghana, where a small colony within a community reserve was discovered about a decade ago and subsequently made available for eco-tourism purposes, providing much needed financial assistance to an otherwise impoverished community. It was during a visit to the area that Adam Riley captured this brilliant image of this very striking and interesting bird.

The Blue-grey Tanager can often be found in pairs or groups, and lives mostly off of fruit. I found and photographed this one in Panama.

I photographed this pair of Blue-crowned Motmots at the The Canopy Tower, Panama. They are known for their calls to be very similar to an owl’s.
